Materials
Forged carbon steel head with a riveted through-tang and a turned ash handle finished in linseed oil. Carbon steel rather than stainless because it takes and holds an edge; a stainless trowel is a scoop, not a cutting tool.
Care
Carbon steel will rust if you leave it wet in a border, and it does not matter much — surface rust wipes off. Push it into a bucket of sand with a little oil in it at the end of the day and it will outlive you.
